Duc Rod
Project By: Dale W. King (DWKing2@cox.net)

Click To EnlargeThis is one of those strange fantasy models I build from time to time. I think of this model as "Chip Foose ( famous American hot rod designer) meets Ducati". At a Tamiya model club meeting at their North American headquarters here in Southern California we were asked, just for fun, to build something out of the kits they had which had been raided for parts for their customers.

I picked up three or four 1/12th Ducati kits and decided to see if I could build a hot rod out of it. I generally build sports and racing cars but from time to time I like to try something a little different. I tried to use as many of the kit parts as possible. The body and suspension are totally scratch built but the plastic parts come from the Tamiya Ducati kits (the steering wheel and seat are out of my Tamiya parts box). I first designed the car on paper then made a full set of plans. The body is carved out of Renshape (a milling material used for pattern making) and the suspension "A" arms are created in brass. The uprights or hubs were made using brass, aluminum and Renshape. The engine was detailed out and a new exhaust system added. The paint is a pearl Mallard green blown on with an airbrush and then clear coated in 3 part urethane and the entire insides are done in carbon fiber decals.

It was great fun to build but now I'm back to more serious models of "real" cars and bikes.

Customizing, Forced induction systems (turbocharging, supercharging, nitrous oxide, etc.), drag racing, road racing and driving a motor vehicle are ALL inherently dangerous and should never be taken lightly.
